MISSISSIPPI HOT AIR BALLOON CHAMPIONSHIP
BALLOON RACE 2007
JUNE 29 – JULY 1, 2007
The 22nd Annual MS Hot Air Balloon Championship Race began on Friday evening with a Balloon Glow at the Celebrate America event at Northpark Mall in Ridgeland, MS. The field was packed with the 26 balloons and pilots from the Southeast region (and one from up north). This event is a real crowd pleaser and the children really get a thrill from the balloons glowing and twinkling in the night. The glow went off a little early due to the main act wanted the stage.
The next morning was a beautiful morning. Despite rain being in the forecast the entire weekend this flight could not have been better. Although the winds decided to be a little temperamental at least 7 pilots were able to show their skills in front of spectators at the target at the Canton-Madison Multi-Purpose Complex. Pilot Mark Bowie of Greenwood, MS made an effortless 11 inch throw. Stephen Guido of Natchez, MS was in 2nd place at the end of the flight.
Saturday afternoon was filled with activities for the children, along with music that the adults could enjoy. Helicopter rides was also a highlight of the afternoon. The weather had another idea for the evening. Thunderstorms in the distance grounded the afternoon flight . Then there was rain which cancelled the glow. The rain did stop and the fireworks show was still able to go off without a hitch.
Sunday morning began with great weather and all the pilots were able to launch for a beautiful array of color. This morning 20 balloons were able to fly over the target and show off their skills. Mike Hanson was first on this task with a throw of 13 inches. Tim Slattery was second place on this task. The scores were totaled for both days and after a brunch prepared by the Good Samaritan staff the awards were presented. Please join me in congratulating the following pilots: 1st place Mark Bowie, 2nd place Mike Hanson of Indianola, MS and 3rd place Bill Cunningham of Germantown, TN.
This race was put on by the Mid-Mississippi Balloon Association along with Good Samaritan Center of Jackson, MS and the Parks and Recreation Department of Canton, MS.
